Update: this post was updated with my latest selection in 2024.

As a productivity geek, the idea of doing two things at the same time with great efficiency is like a dream come true.

This is why I love podcasts.

You can be running in the park, doing your Sunday shopping, or cooking up dinner – and still learn a ton from great marketing experts.

I’ve been a podcast fan for a long, long time, and I’ve gone through a fair percentage of the marketing-related audio content out there. I’ve seen some favorite shows come and go – and come back again! So, I decided to share some of my longstanding favorites – as well as a couple of the shows that don’t fall squarely in the marketing field, but I still love.

The top marketing podcasts I’d recommend (and have been listening to in a really long while):

  • For Immediate Release
  • This Old Marketing
  • The Long Game
  • Everyone Hates Marketers
  • Marketing Over Coffee
  • Social Media Marketing Podcast
  • Six Pixels of Separation
  • Marketing Against the Grain
  • The Akimbo Podcast

And three extras for content creators:

  • Unthinkable
  • Creator Science Podcast
  • Copyblogger Podcast

My go-to marketing podcasts

These are the shows that have been bringing me useful content for years on end. Some of them were even part of the reason for me getting into digital marketing in the first place!

This Old Marketing

Episode length: 60 minutes; Cadence: weekly

When “This Old Marketing” stopped a few years ago, I was incredibly distraught. Thankfully, content marketing veterans Robert Rose and Joe Pulizzi restarted the show with new-found vigor.

Get ready for a full hour of content marketing news, discussions about the practices, and some deep-dive analyses of new trends in media, content creation, and marketing.

The Long Game

Episode length: 60 minutes; Cadence: weekly

The podcast of content agency Omniscient is full of great strategic discussions about content. I enjoy the fact that it’s not just a bunch of experts nodding, but there are actual differences of opinion. Marketing is never straightforward, and it’s normal to have different POVs.

The team dives into content marketing, SEO-driven content, and marketing strategy. You’re not here for some hacks or tactics – it’s all about the underlying strategic principles.

For Immediate Release

Episode length: 60 minutes; Cadence: monthly

This used to be a weekly show before a bunch of different reorganizations happened. Now, Shel Holtz and Neville Hobson get together for a monthly recap of the latest marketing and PR topics.

The show revolves around communication rather than pure marketing, featuring a lot of topics around internal comms and media relations. The show also features a stronger focus on tech with Dan York’s tech report.

Everyone Hates Marketers

Episode length: 60 minutes; Cadence: weekly

I’ve had the chance to meet Louis in person, and this makes listening to EHM that much cooler. His unapologetic approach to no-BS marketing is not a publicity stunt but a true physical intolerance to hacky, spammy, short-term marketing thinking.

Thankfully, there are a lot of great marketing experts willing to combat marketing BS through Louis’ show. He makes sure that each episode provides actionable step-by-step advice. The episodes cover customer research, value proposition design, and intricate marketing strategies.

Marketing Over Coffee

Episode length: 30 minutes; Cadence: weekly

I think this is the first podcast I subscribed to. I still follow it with great interest. I was still in university, and I was fascinated to have access to international marketing practices and news.

John Wall and Christopher S. Penn talk about the intersection of marketing and technology. They cover digital marketing news, as well as new tech news and gadgets.

Social Media Marketing Podcast

Episode length: 60 minutes; Cadence: weekly

Social Media Examiner is the greatest online resource for social media marketers, both novice and advanced. So it’s no surprise their podcast is also amazing. Each episode introduces a new expert interview with ideas you can implement in your own social marketing strategy.

The episodes cover the latest marketing best practices and the current hot topics, be they Tik Tok basics, live videos, or perennial focus points like social media measurement.

Six Pixels of Separation

Episode length: 60 minutes; Cadence: weekly

It’s hard for me to put a specific label on Mitch Joel’s show. But if I had to, it’d be something along the lines of “digital entrepreneurship.” Mitch’s long-standing career makes it easy for him to reach amazing guests like Seth Godin, Jonah Berger, Avinash Kaushik, and Simon Sinek.

This is not a show focused on marketing tactics. The interviews cover tech, the evolution of digital channels, creativity, and innovation. It’s more of an inspirational content format that will help you become a future-proof professional.

Marketing Against the Grain

Episode length: varies, 30-ish minutes; Cadence: twice a week

I have high regard for both hosts – Kipp Bodnar (HubSpot’s CMO) and Kieran Flanagan (Zapier’s CMO). This is probably why I broke my own rule of not signing up for high-cadence podcasts. And thank God I did!

This has become my go-to podcast to follow AI trends, as well as all sorts of other innovations in marketing. But Kipp and Kieran are no tech-bros – they also discuss strategic marketing topics like goal-setting and budgeting.

Akimbo: A Podcast from Seth Godin

Episode length: 20-30 minutes; Cadence: weekly

Seth Godin is a wonderful man that talks with calm and calmness about complex topics – and he can make your head explode with value. His podcast is very similar to his blog essays. It focuses on different aspects of professional life in the digital age, creativity, and marketing.

This is one will add a useful helping of philosophical insights to your diet of practical tips and technical how-tos.

Honorable mentions: podcasts for content creators and digital entrepreneurs

The podcasts mentioned above have already won my long-lasting love. And I’ll definitely recommend any marketer to give them a listen. But this isn’t everything that’s on my podcast app.

So I thought I’d also include my top 3 podcasts for content creators. These will be useful to marketers, of course, but they can also work for you if you’re creating content for your personal brand.

Unthinkable with Jay Acunzo

Episode length: 30-40 minutes; Cadence: every two weeks

Jay Acunzo has two types of episodes. There are interviews with awesome content creators here, but there are also audio essays on content creation, storytelling, and everything related to a creator’s life.

Quotes from Jay often become kernels for future posts of mine, or they make it into the editorial section of my newsletter. And with good reason – he has a knack for synthesizing fundamental principles in punchy phrases that make you think.

Creator Science Podcast

Episode length: 40-50 minutes; Cadence: weekly

Jay Close helps professional content creators succeed in building audiences, fostering connections, and finding the right way to monetize. His guests go from your typical marketing experts to young creators who are winning the TikTok war for attention. And thanks to his interview style, they share some important lessons it’ll take you ages to learn through experience alone.

I also love Jay’s work because he puts an emphasis on strategic focus. He doesn’t expect you to hustle your tush off – and his advice is designed to help you build efficient systems.

Copyblogger Podcast

Episode length: 50 minutes; Cadence: weekly

The blurb on Copyblogger’s site says the podcast is all about “content marketing, copywriting, email marketing, conversion optimization, mindset, and much more.” By listening along, though, I feel it’s much more geared towards solopreneurs and content creators who want to monetize their content rather than your vanilla in-house content marketer. That’s why I’ve put it in this category.

Still, this is a treasure trove of insights about content production efficiency, measurement and attribution, experimentation, etc.

Listen ahead

Podcasts make it in the top three of my favorite learning resources because they let you ingest other people’s experiences and learn from their mistakes. They require attention, but they are easily combined with physical activities, so it’s easy to sneak in some learning in the gym or during commute time.

I hope you find these suggestions helpful – and don’t be shy to add your recommendations in the comments!
